What the label says:

The Bon Bon Club are Sushi Quatro (bass, vox), Thirsty Moore (drums, vox) and Chapatti Smith (perc, vox), although Sushi and Thirsty are better known under different names for their day job as the rhythm section of Sheffield glam-popsters The Long Blondes and Chapatti also plays in ace Thee SPC signings Slow Down Tallahasse and Angular Recordings post-punkers Navvy.

On this single The Bon Bon Club hit us with a Hulk-fist sized triple whammy (plus!) of cover versions.  Rather than slow the songs down on acoustic guitar to ‘show the great songwriting’ like every Jo Wiley Live Lounge indie plodder, the Bon Bons strip ‘em down and rip ‘em up to the real essentials—the bass and drums.  This is how you do it.

First up, The Cure’s 1989 balearic/goth crossover classic “Lullaby” has its tale of gynophobia twisted with the addition of sweetly cooing twin female vox.  Next, fittingly for a Sheffield group, is a fiendishly catchy, grinding take on Pulp’s 1992 “Love is Blind”, which is even produced by the same studio genius, Alan Smyth, as the original.  Finally, fellow rhythm-section-only band Death from Above 1979 have their 2004 “Romantic Rights” folded and live-mashed into songs by Marilyn Manson and, far creepier, Gary Glitter. (Hey, if George Bush was still blasting “Rock and Roll Part 2” as part of his 2004 re-election campaign then who are we to say it’s not good enough for The Bon Bon Club?)
