What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Yellow 6 has a new album out on the rather useful Distant Noise label. These nice looking and thankfully nice sounding things are limited to 100 copies and always sell out. We don't have too many of these so I wouldn't dawdle. The 6meister has always been a popular chappie here at the towers since he started back in '98 or whenever it was. To be honest his sound hasn't changed much over the years and when he started it was pretty floaty drifty gear and here we are 10 years on and it's still pretty floaty gear. What he has done is refine his sound, and get a lot better. This new album (STHLM) was written at the same time as the ' When The Leaves Fall Like Snow' 2CD set on Resonant. It's a similar record though it's much more minimal and sparse.... for the first time I listened to a Yellow 6 record and thought it was post rock without the rock. It's really very beautiful and atmospheric sounding. Well lush!!

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Okay so both Phil and I accidently reviewed this...Yellow 6's music has been adored here at the towers for many moons. His sounds always bring a welcome sense of calm and reflection to proceedings. There's been a lot of CD's recently on Distant Noise flying out of these doors and his style fits with the label like some kind of special glove. You could in fact probably argue that he's somewhat of a grand master of this type of ultra soothing dreamy drifting shoegaze guitar magic.... We're just coming to the end of another busy day and John Attwood's blissful tones on 'STHLM' are winding me down nicely. His playing really comes through with the effects complementing it perfectly. It's a good balance as it never gets too swamped in layers of reverb and retains a lovely organic flow. Hand numbered edition of 100.. Be quick like.

What the label says:

For 10 years, Jon Attwood under theme of Yellow6 has been creating music which has been loosely associated with a number of genres (space rock, post-rock, ambient, shoegaze, drone, electronica….) but never really fitted comfortably with any, leaving a trail of over 60 releases on labels across the globe – a total of 280 songs (30+ hours of music)…

Written and recorded over a 6 week period spent in Stockholm in the fall of 2007, during the same period as recent album "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow", the tracks that form STHLM are among the most minimal of the Yellow6 creations to date consisting of melancholy, drifting and looping guitars, aided by some more harsh undercurrents.
