What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Billy Childish is a prolific producer of music. This is an unarguable statement. Over the years he's released far too many records for his own good. Some of them great... some of them rubbish and possibly most pertinently is a lot of them sound the same. Here he is with the Members of The British Empire with their brand new album 'Thatcher's Children' on the Damaged Goods label. Here you get 12 tracks of vintage sounding Billy doing his garage punk rock thing. It's not my favourite record by him but there's a few good tunes on there. Rosie Jones is a bit smart and the last single was a cracker 'n all. Oi Oi punk attitude from a chap who doesn't care a jot about fashion nor where he's putting his pee pee as I've only just found out he was nobbing Tracy Emin.

What the label says:

This is their third album in as many years and has 12 new tracks including the title track, which will also be available in an alternative version as a limited 7” (Damgood 311).The front cover has been designed by legendary Sex Pistols cover artist Jamie Reid who also shows at London gallery ‘The Aquarium’ alongside Billy, Sexton Ming, James Cauty and more.  The back cover has a lovely picture of Maggie in her best Churchillian pose!We think this is their best album to date and probably one of Billy’s best ever, as usual the songs are fast and furious with biting lyrics and wry observations on today’s world. Every 5 years or so Billy Childish is sited by the current top band as the embodiment of rock ‘n’ roll integrity, and every 5 years or so Billy splits his group up and starts again from scratch. With his latest combo, The Musicians of the British Empire, Billy carries on his tradition of home made punk and rhythm and blues. This is what a real rock ’n’ roll group sounds like.
