What we say
This record left our Brett feeling happy.
I swear the second track on this one sounds exactly like John Fahey covering Guns n' Roses' classic 'Don't Cry' over a backpack hip-hop beat, it's fucking weird. Got to respect W. Axl Rose PhD's denim cutoff hotpants in the comically overwrought video though; how in FUCK did the original orange goblin end up with Stephanie Seymour back then? That's the first mystery I'll be asking god to solve when I get through those pearly gates.. Check out how high Slash can fling a Les Paul too, them shits are heavy! The Stoke shredder's obviously got at least one healthy pair of pythons in his snakepit. Anyway, the CD I'm doing a good job of not reviewing at all features people like Piano Magic, Port Royal and Depth Affect remixing d_rradio tracks with generally pleasant results. 'Pleasant' being about the best word I can think of to describe this, it's quite nice as background music but it's not something I find massively engaging, the mixture of electronica, hip-hop, glitch and whatnot is generally a bit too polite for my tastes but the quality is very obviously there if this is more your bag than it is mine. I'm off to play that Haemorraging Foetus LP we got in last week all night while cursing myself in a cracked mirror. See you!
This record left our Phil feeling happy.
Death Row Radio (or d_rradio to you and me) have had a number of things out now and here's a CD of remixes of said band by such electronic luminaries as Cathode, Manual, Populous, Depth Affect, The Matinee Orchestra, Ylid, Juxta Phone, Piano Magic, Matthew Rozeik and Port Royal. There should be 10 mixes there if I've remembered to list every one. Certainly fans of the Morr label will lap this up. It treads that indietronica path favoured by said Arian funsticks. I quite like the term wrongtronica or wrongica but it's not really appropriate in this case as this isn't wrong. I just wanted to write wrongtronica as it's ridiculous. I enjoyed this beast anyway and if you liked the album you'll be more than interested in checking what some of the above folks have done to the tracks. d_rradio Remixed is CD only!
What the label says:
When d_rradio’s three-years-in-the-making self-titled opus maximus hit
the racks back in March 2008, they set the bar dangerously high for
electronica. The album swiftly stacked up the plaudits: Silent Ballet
declared that the album would “undoubtedly go down as one of the
premier electronic releases of the year”, Rob da Bank proclaiming it an
“absolutely incredible electronic album”, with Losing Today calling it
“an enchanting and exquisite experience”. Hell, it even had reviewers
at The Wire breaking into a smile. There are a wide range of remixes
on offer here: from the crackling chambertronics of Cathode’s rework of
Paper Soul, to Manual’s exemplary dark, opaque version of A Life Alive,
through to the beautiful beat-driven Populous’ aptly-named Twisted
remix of Rest of Your Life. The journey continues, with Depth Affect’s
skittering, icily minimal re-rub of Bag of Lovely nestling alongside
The Matinee Orchestra’s Victorian Clockwork techno take on Wish For
More Wishes and Ylid’s magnificently haunting vocal rework of Blow
Out. Maintaining a suitably high standard are Juxta Phona turning So
Long into a juddering glitchfest, Piano Magic’s childlike and sublime
reworking of Way Out, Matthew Rozeik’s sombre yet swirling
light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel version of Lifted, and finally
Port-Royal’s dramatic revamp of Long Way Home. Above all, ‘. .
.remixed’ is an album that retains what is so great about d_rradio –
eschewing the blandscape coffee-table Warp-alikes and displaying that
electronic music can be diverse, invigorating, soulful and, above all,
human.Tracklist : 1/Paper Soul (Cathode remix) 2/A Life Alive (First
