What we say This record left our Clinton feeling happy. beware Arthur Russel fans  - proceed with caution  - the first half of this cd is dreadful & should have never seen the light of day. home demos in a country-lite style  - Mr Russell was known for disgarding mountains of music and will be turning in his grave at the thought that people are paying for this. BUT BUT BUT the second half shows Russell in better form and at his most poppy which is still an odd discordant type of pop  - but one that is quite remarkably effective  - typically looping cellos and odd bass led melodies and the usual slightly discordant vocals. some remarkable songs here one of which almost had me in tears. so as long as you know what you're getting is hit and miss and with the distant sound of barrels being scraped this is worth persevering with What the label says: We are proud to release this beautiful collection of pop, folk & country gems - arguably the most accessible songs from his career - spanning the artist’s early compositions from the early ‘70s to his latest, before his untimely death from AIDs in 1992. •    Arthur Russell’s music has won love from a wide cross section of artists including Talking Heads, Phillip Glass, Jens Lekman, Hercules & The Love Affair. •    Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear tenderly contributed to mixing, restoration and editing. •    Extensive sleeve notes from Arthur’s partner Tom Lee •    A selection of the tracks will debut in a well timed film, 'Wild Combination; a Portrait of Arthur Russell' detailing Arthur's life & music, featuring contributions from Philip Glass, Ernie Brooks (The Modern Lovers), Jens Lekman & many more. •    It will air at arts cinemas at the end of September with a DVD to follow in November (more details below).

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
