What we say
This record left our Brian feeling sad.
Shortwave Set. I remember they used to be quite good fun in a funky acid jazz hobo psychedelic blues way. Now they've put out this new 'Glitches n Bugs' 7" on Wall of Sound which is possibly the worst British label of all time, bar Skint records. Or Weekender. I've played it twice & it's a plodding indie-soul abomination with dull lackluster girl boy vocals that sound as mundane as deciding what kind of drain cleaner to buy from Wilkinson's on a Sunday before taking the screaming rent-a-tantrum bags of clothes destroying ragamuffins you call your family to the wacky Warehouse for a turgid "roast" & halves of watery stones bitter on erm....a rainy Sunday. In the suburbs of Wrexham. Or Dagenham. Produced by Danger Mouse. I think Penfold would have done a better job. He's currently sat here drying out in a Royal Mail sack after being splashed to fuck in the snow all morning by evil Leeds bus drivers. Poor wee lamb.
What the label says:
Following the widespread critical acclaim bestowed upon their Dangermouse produced second album ‘Replica Sun Machine’, The Shortwave Set deliver a single version of the stand out track ‘Glitches ‘N’ Bugs’, a song conceived, so the band say, as “a celebration of the little irritations and errors which act as a splendid and wonderful diversion from serious issues infinitely less appealing to consider, allowing us to conveniently avoid the fact that our lives are falling apart...”. · The package includes the band’s esoteric take on labelmate Grace Jones’ ‘Slave To The Rhythm’, where melotron choirs and drum machines combine to haunting effect, providing a stark backdrop for singer Ulrika’s Nico-esque vocal. · It also comes backed with new track ‘Homesick’, a Beck-esque slice of hip pop funk, and remixes that are already causing mild-mannered mania in clubland.
