What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

A retrospective of the The Telescopes has come out. Well it's more a comp of singles they did over a 3 year period. That's not a retrospective at all. It's a singles comp. Well a 3 year singles comp. Fuck I'm confused. It covers 1989 to 1991... basically from the Perfect Needle to Flying. Hearing this again made me realize how shit a lot of music is these days. Some of the tracks later on (the latter Creation period) aren't quite as good but I defy anyone to listen to the Perfect Needle and not think it's a work of genius. I've still got the goose pimples in my hand. There's tracks like Sadness Pale which sound like a B side from MBV's You made me Realise EP. Later on it gets less fuzzy and more commercial and poppy. There's some tunes on there... I still like Flying. Basically anyone who was into that whole Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine thing should check this out cos it documents a band who were largely ignored which is a shame cos they made some great tunes. They still are in fact though it's vastly different these days with all the widdly darkness that they're doing. 'The Singles 1989-1991' is CD only on the Mind Expansion label. Smashing!!

What the label says:

A collection of Telescopes A's & B's from the "What Goes On" to "Creation" years. Including extra tracks from the original Perfect Needle EP. 14 timeless tracks ranging from abrasive to ethereal. Produced by Richard Formby & Stephen Lawrie. Highly recommended to all fans of shoegaze & space rock ala My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Fuxa & Spacemen 3. With the recent success of My Bloody Valentine's reunion tour, look for The Telescopes to be the next big thing! Telescopes will tour the USA in 2009 along with Fuxa performing most of these classic tracks. Well, i'd skip the "shoegaze" to be honest, this is when the Telescopes were at their most fierce, "To Kill A Slow Girl Walking", goodness, thats the kind of track that could destroy a whole town, their debut album "Taste" still sounds fresh, they were loud, had fringes, and phasers set to stun, wah /distorto informed pop. Very highly recommended.
