What we say
This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.
Pinch's productions are usually fairly sparse, minimal and spacious. He's one of those producers that seems to be constantly improving his sound and with 'Midnight Oil' he's proved this. The drums are gloriously heavy and he's got that sci-fi atmosphere but this time he's injected some excellent melody which really takes things deeper. Also the sequencing of the track is more adventurous and less linear. I'm really feeling this one. 'Joyride' is another heavy number with big rolling drums that push all the right buttons. It actually reminds me of Surgeon. A lot of dubstep seems to be more and more techno sounding which is good but I do miss the proper dub elements that got me interested in the genre in the first place. A mighty fine 12" though.
What the label says:
"genuinely believe this is one of the finest things Pinch has ever produced, absolutely blows me away! just glorious in every sense of the word, masterful this track (Joyride)" Mary Anne Hobbs Pinch's reputation for making dance music that goes beyond the confines of generic categorizations of 'dubstep', is a well earned one. Like most musical innovators, the process of destroying and rebuilding the bases on which they develop their sound is a necessity for constant progression. And Pinch ain't no fool. He has no desire to retread the ground he's already covered - the same ground that many of his imitators are still trying to find their footing on. 2007's 'Underwater Dancehall' album put both Pinch and his Tectonic label firmly on the map as purveyors of a fresh sound; dark, minimal and totally slamming dance music. Dubstep? Sure, but something more - a unique, forward-thinking advancement. And so fresh on the heels of a series of cutting-edge 12"s from massive names such as Skream, RSD, 2562 and Peverlist, Tectonic hails a welcome return from the labels main man - his first Tectonic cut since 'Underwater Dancehall'. A-side 'Midnight Oil' is just sick - it's gorgeous ethereal pitched-up string loop giving way to a pummeling, syncopated kick drum. This is beyond dubstep - this is something ahead of its time - a future form of dance, all kept as minimal as necessary to blow away anything else that could be aired on the dancefloor. And as far as production goes, check out the super-tight snare crack and the rolling bass that sounds not so much played as flattened into the mix with a mallet - simply perfection. B-side 'Joyride' is a suspense-laden groove, its tuned percussion and plucky reverberating sound stabs seem to be constantly building and morphing in and out of phase - textured and real laid-back, Joyride is something of a contrast to the A-side's nasty underlying premise. This is another reminder 2 / 10 and out of phase - textured and real laid-back, Joyride is something of a contrast to the A-side's nasty underlying premise. This is another reminder why Pinch's versatility makes him so in demand for remix work. The Midnight Oil 12" is sure to sell out fast and will no doubt put those 'in the know' on edge in anticipation of more sound-pushing floor-killers from Pinch. Another total winner - what will he come up with next? |
