What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

As regular perusers of our weekly snail-out will know, I fell off my chair at the wonderment of the last Of Montreal album. Well the one before the new one which I've not quite grasped the camp exuberance of as yet. I've got it at home waiting for a rainy day when I hope it will liberate me from the crushing daily mood plummets that hinder my existence. Ha fucking ha. Joshing aside, they've covered 'Jimmy' by M.I.A., a most obtuse choice indeed. It sounds a little in the spirit of 'Hey Matthew' by Karel Fialka (an 80's oddity alongside Jona Lewie's 'Alway's Standing in the Kitchen at Parties') A perky little cosmic lounge-pop number with hushed sing-song vocals and an incredibly sweet melody like a lazy snake charming passage popping up intermittently. It's much gentler, and thoughtful than the album, a really individual & endearing rendition. The flip is an incredibly brief psychedelic dirge, like one of those hazy Royal Trux oddities - according to Afghan Brett - they used to do after injecting heroin & frog sputum into their eyeballs. Worth it lots for the 'A' especially & the additional DVD which I've not had the chance to check. Also, the artwork (it's a heavyweight picture discette with fabulous sprawling psych-illustrationzzzzzzz) A proper nice collectors piece.

What the label says:

HEARTFAST picture7”w/DVD series No.5 is of Montreal, Just after they dropped their new album ”Skeletal Lamping”. Side A is M.I.A.’s cover called “Jimmy”. But it sounds very of Montreal. They did special arrange for this 7”, Side B is exclusive track for this 7”. DVD is live footage and their back stage etc……from their 2007 u.s. tour collect and edit by of Montreal.
Message from Kevin Barnes:
“Middle Class Ghetto is an exclusive and unreleased track. i chose jimmy because i really loved the song and wanted to try and reinterpret it. we have played it live once or twice. the dvd footage was taken on tour in the united states in 2007”.
