I have been keeping track of Idiot Son's progress for some years now after catching them at Water Rats back in 2001. Their output is scant but what they have produced is consistently touching, heartfelt music of an introspective nature rarely found in London based bands. Sunflowers is a carefully composed and beautifully played love story in which the protagonist (sung by lead singer Andy Thompson) has the best of intentions but very low self-esteem. Gentle drums ease the guitars and cello through the narrative, climaxing with chorus after chorus of glorious backing vocals. The B-side is a charmer too by the way. (If you can find it try and get hold of their debut album 'Lummox' which features a string quartet amongst numerous other instrumental contributions, in a similar vein to Lambchop.)
