What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Clint feeling ecstatic.

Do Make Say Think are my favourite of the Constellation bands. They avoid the unrelenting pomposity of your Godspeeds but have the melodic and arranging know-how to create records that are varied, emotional and huge in scope. Being a wanker muso, I'd say that the best thing about this record are the drums. They are fantastic throughout. But that's just one little part of the whole jigsaw. Anyone interested in instrumental rock/post rock, whatever you want to call it should check out this record and live with it through the winter months. Winter Hymn Country Hymn Service Hymn is on CD and LP

What the label says:

Do Make Say Think have fashioned a fourth full-length album of tremendous beauty and depth, more loosely woven than previous records and played with a dark, wistful restraint throughout. These new songs are eerie and iridescent, composed and captured with mesmerising attention to detail, guided by the band's most intricate and intimate guitar passages to date, full of delicate transitions and soulful punctuations. Many of the songs feature a newfound non-linearity in compositional structure that once again raises the DMST bar, imbuing instrumental rock with heartrending -- yes, even hymnal -- narrative ideas.

More than any previous effort by the band, this is an album that demands to be listened to as a whole, or at least in the triptychs defined by the three-sided vinyl edition. Recorded in three sessions over the winter and spring of 2003, most of the tracks went to tape at two rural locations. The resulting campfire vibe on much of this material is reminiscent of the band's second record, Goodbye Enemy Airship... (cst010), but with more density and complexity throughout. Mixed by the group at th'Schvitz, their Toronto home studio, the album continues to highlight DMST's inventive production touches, always at the service of the musical ideas.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
