What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Clint feeling happy.

u.n.p.o.c (what???) new limited 7" on Domino. Sounds a bit like a snazzier Mull Historical Society. Not over keen but its grown on Pips here so all being well it'll grow on me too. They are part of the Fence collective which brings me nicely to Pip Dylan. Firstly its great to se someone called Pip making records who isn't Pip Proud or Gladys Knight and the Pips or our Pips here at the towers. Also the album is called "Of all the things I can eat I'm always happy with a piece of cheese"- its funny 'cause its true. The music is nice singer songwriter type stuff. Another Fence thing by King Creosote  - this is really  nice lo-fi acoustic stuff very poppy - reminds me of some of the  stuff that comes out of Australia  - The Lucksmiths spring to mind. Features James Yorkston on a couple of tracks.  Amsterdam is 7" only

What the label says:

Taken from the album, Fifth Column, U.N.P.O.C.’s debut 45 is a slice of outsider pop at its most melodic and triumphant. A singular vision and mastery of his own lo-fi mini studio sets U.N.P.O.C. apart from the others, as he belts his way through these all-too brief moments of musical isolationism. ‘Amsterdam’ and its flipside,‘Here On My Own’, are pop gems in another world, where the tools of a Spector or Wilson are stripped down to the basics: guitars, bass, multi-tracked voice, and the spectral sound of studio hiss and hum.

Setting out from that same wondrous place as the near-legendary Fence Collective (King Creosote, Pip Dylan, James Yorkston…), U.N.P.O.C.’s unique sound is something to treasure, and his songs are those that – once heard, cannot leave you behind. Check him out – the new folk sound is on Domino!
