What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Herman Dune. They're French you know. Beards are in evidence. Bob Dylan may have guested on their sterogram at some point. And Lou Reed. This is pleasant enough stuff actually. Tuneful & earthy gear with folk & country tinges. I was soooo expecting to go on some kind of homicidal rampage after hearing 'Not On Top' but It really does have some real charm, warmth & soul. 15 tracks, CD only on Track & field. I'm shocked to heartily recommend this.

What the label says:

The Paris based Swedish / Swiss trio of André, David and Neman Herman Düne return with their 6th LP of lo-fi folk beauty. On this occasion they’re augmented by Canadian Julie Doiron (formerly of Eric’s Trip) on bass and backing vocals.

Not on Top was made in Leeds, England with former Sonic Boom collaborator, Richard Formby, and recorded in mono. Why mono? Well, mono just sounds best, of course. As David-Ivar puts it, ‘If you're cooking in you're kitchen and your stereo is in the next room, what are the chances that you're gonna be right in the middle of the two speakers? Stereo is such a Renaissance approach to music. The artists, the producer, the sound guy, want you to be sitting somewhere in particular, between the two speakers. Listening to stereo CDs, while driving on tour, I noticed it’s not fair that the driver only gets the left speaker mix. It’s kinda dumb, right?

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
