What we say
This record left our Clint feeling ecstatic.
Vashti Bunyan has released her second album 35 years after the first
one. She makes Kate Bush seem prolific. The thing is, over the years, for
some reason the first one has gained all these cult fans (like Four Tet
and Animal Collective -with whom she recently collaborated). Its
sometimes quite hard to see why the fuss as it just seems to be pleasant late
60's pastoral folk music. Very nice but hardly groundbreaking. Anyway the new
one is here and they are all there (the bloody Banharts, Newsom's &
Adem's - that sort) barging their way onto other peoples records. The result
is nothing too dissimilar from the first one. Gentle rural folk music, nice
songs from a thoroughly nice sounding lady who sings beautifully. The album is
full of lovely arrangements with harp, vibraphone, acoustic guitars and
some amazing strings. I don't know who to compare it to but its safe to say Movietone
have listened to her music once or twice and the female Nick Drake thing
is a lazy but apt description. This album though is soothing throughout and never dark
nor troubled. On Fat Cat and highly recommended.
