What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Clinton feeling ecstatic.

I really like this CD by Vase. As you probably realise by reading my weekly ramblings  - I'm entirely fed up of all the records I have to review sounding exactly the same.  So its nice to have something with a bit of originality to it. It's simple homespun singer songwriter stuff but has the kind of pastoral yearning that is lost in a lot of  other records. At times it sits somewhere between Havergal and Empress (two of my favourite bands ever). But that could possibly mean absolutely nothing to you so try to think of an English rural Low battling against the Hefner/Darren Hayman back catalogue (it has that lispy English thing going on) or a minimalist lo-fi Start (or even Stuart) Murdoch (Belle and Sebastian) side project. Anyway I think you get the idea. Definitely worth a punt. On Hand Idiom Records.

What the label says:

The album contains nine new songs, written and performed by Stephen Lane with the gracious flair of George Mckenzie (Headfall) playing Violin, drums and percussion, and a hushed vocal duet with Tammy Denitto (Linus) on the song 'Hide My Panama Hat'.

The album merges gentle acoustics and subtle electronic sounds with understated and softly spoken vocals'

"My intention is to make music conveying a homemade sound with a melancholic tone.

Over the years I have collaborated with George McKenzie (Headfall), and Matt and Sam Jones (Movietone(/Crescent)".  - Stephen Lane

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
