Yes the Arctic Monkeys, beloved of no-one here but me (well I think I'm more of an enthusiastic apologist than a genuine gig going, t-shirt wearing FANBOY) have thier new single out & it's just bloody everywhere. Still those echoes of The Libertines dog them at every turn. They can't quite shake that most obvious of contemporary influences but one 'When The Sun Goes Down' kicks in It's a twangy, pacey & irresistible indie mosh-pit classic & quite possibly another chart topper. There's that looseness & cocky sussed charm that sets them apart. A song that references 'Roxanne' by The Police & Ford Mondeos & includes that most British of words, "scumbag" is very much keeping it northern & undeniably real This infectious take on trad Brit-rock with a canny grasp of indie classicism isn't gonna win them a Wire award for innovation (the B-sides sound pretty dashed-off Clint rightly points out) but it's real nice to hear a spiky, stubborn & energetic young band take the lead in the campaign to keep manufactured dross of the top of the mount Everest that is popular music. 7" & CDs (You need both to get all the tracks this time)
