What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Here is a tidy comp from Transgressive. Yes, the uber collectors label that acts as some serious arbitor of cool in the current musical climate. There's mixed feelings about some of the acts on here as a whole, the way they've been ruthlessly springboarded into the nations front rooms, relentlessly hyped as the best new bands around. The debut singles Transgressive sneaked out however have been consistently excellent. Even The Subways who I think are as woefully average as Phil feels about the Arctics provided one of the moments of 2004 for me with the sweet, energetic & love of life fuelled '1am'. 'Zoo Time' by Mystery Jets, The Young Knives 'junky...' EP, the itchy new wave skank of Burningpilot...these all thrilled me to bits, reminding me of bands that have inspired & delighted me for over half my life. There's some gear on here like Pipettes & Ladyfuzz I reckon doesn't quite hit the mark but if you missed all those early singles then here they are in pure digital glory, b-sides n'all. Plus a song each from Bloc Party & The Rakes culled from sister label Trash Aesthetics. Cor blimey guv. Could we also have a fun packed DVD with live cuts & wobbly promo vids on too? Ok then, you got it! Yes, this comp is for all you sad sacks who "don't have the time or room for vinyl in your life" A worthy starter pack for a label more on the ball than most.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
