What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

Twinkling, pulsating melancholy from PALM SPRINGS who craftily veer between (the quiet side of) Early JAMC, Belle & Sebastian, Cranebuilders & Tindersticks to create a very sweet & majestic album. Lush orchestration over yearning vocals, songs that occasionally recall a folksy downtempo Field Mice to these ears. 'No Hurt Like a Broken Heart' is what i'd term a "weepie". The (almost perfect) 10 tunes form an accomplished & coherent album. Imagine yourself swaying bittersweetly along to this on frosty December mornings with just your aging blind three legged dog to keep you company. This talented Brighton based duo are augmented most ably by various musicians/ backing vocalists of a very high calibre indeed. Yes it really does remind me a lot of Tindersticks in the gleeful hopelessness of it all, albeit a less grandiose model. Really rather special. I'd heartily recommend this to ANYONE who digs some of the aforementioned bands or just likes being permanently heartbroken or just loves beautifully written & presented tunes. On Random Acts of Vinyl, CD/LP with an old Triumph on the sleeve, a joy for these old nostalgic eyes. Feast yer ears here

What the label says:

The debut album from Brighton/London based Palm Springs, ‘No Hurt Like A Broken Heart’, features ten songs of rare beauty and painful honesty and is released on the bands own Random Acts Of Vinyl label. The album is dedicated to their friend and cellist, Alice MacGill who died in Thailand in December 2004 during the early months of recording. ‘No Hurt Like A Broken Heart’ represents the band’s panoramic vision for their music, where acoustic guitars rest alongside car-boot electronica, melancholic cellos with timpani drums, melodicas with aging pianos, the lush bedroom orchestration of scarred confessions of loss and regret. The album includes Palm Springs’ first three critically acclaimed singles, ‘Tender Remains’, ‘Echo Of Me’ and ‘Softly To Fallen’ and documents the first two years of this most individual and independent of bands. ‘No Hurt Like A Broken Heart’ is a statement of intent, the first chapter of what promises to be a classic tale.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.

'if you can’t be the song, let the song be.'
