What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Often the process of art is more relevant than the final piece and that could be true for Aussie experimentalist OREN AMBARCHI with His LP Stacte Motors on Western Vinyl. The concept is using only motors to trigger his guitar and cymbals which creates a pulsing repeating apocalyptic soundscape that's turning Ant's trousers wobbly with delight. So powerful and hypnotic is is that I've borrowed the Towers hand fan to go home and try it out for myself. I think its a whirring of the fan skipping on he guitar which is routed through some distortion and delay pedals that creates the madness. Stuff previously out on touch Southern Lord.

What the label says:

Oren Ambarchi's Stacte Motors, is the most recent addition to the Western Vinyl portrait series. Additionally, these pieces continue the Stacte series started in 1998 with Ambarchi's first self-released solo recordings. Similar to the 4 previous editions of the series, which explored one idea at length, Stacte Motors is an experiment in exciting instruments with a spinning motor with strings attached. The resulting recordings are metallic walls of minimalist drones, both fearless and dreamy.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
