"New single from Various Production, but the first from them to suprise my ears. They've got labels like the Leaf, Planet Mu and Warp competing to sign them on, and they sound like a cross between Dizzee Rascal and The Prodigy (in their eariier days). This is damn Killer 7" of gorgeous hip hop/drum 'n bass goodness!"

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.

Enjoying this barmy new(ish) VARIOUS PRODUCTION 7". One side sounds like a cross between Mike Skinner & Dizee Rascal falling down a Rhubarb & Custard splattered staircase of sliced up post grime beats & cartoon basslines. Reminds me a bit of the 8 Frozen Modules 'Don't Mug Yourself' mash up from years ago. Good fun. The remix of 'Home' on the flip is pretty damn cool. The original spook folk masterpiece is layered with much harsher digital layers & slicing future beats that amazingly does little to detract from the delicious soulful beauty of the original. Where the album has still to grab me as a whole, these beauty little 7"s in their fantastical sleeves continue to impress me lots!

What the label says:

The tracks on this latest 7” will not be on that album. However, if you salivating at the prospect of another of their unnerving excursions into moody electro-folk, wipe your chin, as 'Bruk' is a stomping example of what they do equally expertly with a beat, a bassline and an over-excited MC. On the B-side, the new mix of 'Home' also adds some determined rhythmic pressure to the original harmonised vocal version. It's grime, Jim, but not as we know it…

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
