What we say
Quite taken with the wistful beauty of MARISSA NADLER's reissued 'Diamond heart' single. It's spine tingling sad-eyed folk noir carried by a stunning voice , possibly she's the bastard daughter of Hope Sandoval & Richard Hawley. It's got that slightly disembodied feel, gliding above the swaying picked guitar in a distant echo chamber of tear stained loveliness. She truly has something classic about her, recalling purity, grace & timelessness. The reason folk seems to have had such a huge resurgence is that so much music these days is a bland retread of past glories. Not this. Something precious is happening here. 7"/CDs on Peacefrog, top Techno label. What the label says:An introduction to one of the major figures in the current folk revival. A taster for her Peacefrog debut album ‘Song 3: Bird On The Water’.Marissa’s music is dreamy and spectral: an amalgam of traditional folk, paisley underground, shoegaze and dream pop. Almost all of the songs are very sad – about broken hearts, death, or simple burdens. Her voice is what most people immediately respond to, with the writing and playing yielding a slow burn subtlety. Excelling at a John Fahey-esque finger-picking technique, she plays homage to some of the great early American blues players. She sings songs of the sea, the haunting chansons of maidens, the cowboy ditties of ranchers, and the funerary processions of mourners. The eerie quality of her atmospheric music gives her songs a timelessness and sadness that is often described as otherworldly.7” is limited to 500 copies. |
