What we say
This record left our BRIAN D feeling ecstatic.
Quietly legendary, mildly esoteric, shrouded in mystery, HOOD are Leeds' treasured sons of the understated, experimental underground that has thrived like a rampant mushroom in the last 15 years, seemingly around the nucleus of what they dared to create/de-construct within the parameters of 'indie' music. Now singer/figurehead Chris Adams finally steps out of the shadows with his superb solo project BRACKEN. You've all loved the gorgeous single (yes, we just had to give 'Heathens' SOTW) and that song just blossoms with repeated listens. It's his quest for bringing warmth & feeling into the sometimes cold & alien landscape of left field experimentation. Chris has always sought to create something fresh from the sound of old machines working shoulder to shoulder with modern technology whilst creating a music that never looses it's 'boy next door' feel. The bedroom DIY ethic is prevelent here but can I be the first to say that's possibly the vibe Thom Yorke was feeling when he aproached work on 'The Eraser'? Always forward thinking, sparawling & ambitious, this sounds like it could be a more natural successor to 'Cold House' in some ways as the deep whirring panoramic wall of beautiful electronic sound rubs sholders with vibrant, understated percussion, ambient textures & the boy Adams' yearning unmistakable vocals (his best effort yet, nary a cracked wobble on here!) there's all the influences in here you could possibly think of - Prefuse 73, Bark Psychosis, Dub, Sun City Girls, Disco Inferno (the thrilling & unique wall of sound they used to create gets a huge nod on this record) I implore anyone who hold Hood close to thier chest to invest in this. It's not remotely a hip hop album. It's not an IDM album. It's not even a pop album. It's just something crisp & vital from someone who cares deeply about the progression of popular music. I advise you to get some good headphones
What the label says:
*`We Know About the Need' is the highly anticipated debut album from Bracken, the shrouded-in-mystery solo venture of Hood (Domino Recordings) frontman Chris Adams. *Bracken is the first UK signing to anticon, so expect a higher level of profile all round. *The organic chemistry of The Books and the spaciousness of Prefuse 73 both come to mind, but Bracken burrows deeper than the former and plays a million times warmer than the latter. *`We Know About the Need' is full of emotive music . Bracken walk the rarely tread line between electronic and organic, the complex arrangements playing full and easy with every sound in its right place. Freewheeling drum solos careen down a tall hall made up of screeching strings, gnashing metallic teeth, insect-like droning and a single sustained strand of cello.
*Tracklist: 1. Of Athroll Slains (Side A) 2. Heathens 3. (int) 4. Fight or Flight 5. Safe Safe Safe 6. Music for Adverts 7. Evil Teeth (Side B) 8. Four Thousand Style 9. La Monte Lament 10. Many Horses 11. Back On The Calder Line |
