What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

Now DO MAKE SAY THINK with their new album You, You're A History In Rust. They make complex rhythmic patterned music with a whole host of instruments. Now on their 5th album they certainly don't sound rusty with chipper drum patterns supporting organically growing waves of music. Song based but instrumental it makes for a pleasurable afternoon of listening if you have time to spare. Sounds like a friendly less harrowing Godspeed You Black Emperor with some great group singing that sounds hippy but lovely. Pretty diverse sounding with a delicate acoustic guitar now taking the lead. Its hard to write about an album like this as each track offers something different and to write a general soundbite is difficult. All I'll say is this there are some lovely moments on this record and is going in my shopping basket.....yeh man!

What the label says:

Since Constellation issued their self-released debut record in 1998, Do Make Say Think have made one critically-acclaimed album after another.
They are one of the most consistently inventive instrumental rock bands of the past decade, and one of the most self-realised. ‘You, You’re A History In Rust’ is the fifth record by Do Make Say Think and a brilliant extension of the band’s unique sonic narrative.
In many ways the new album picks up where ‘Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn’ left off - acoustic finger picked guitars are the recurring compositional anchor, with drums and percussion fluttering around these campfire themes while horns and electric guitars gather in swarms.
As with previous releases, DMST set up in remote locations for the main recording sessions, tracking these new songs at a cottage and barn in rural Ontario.
Band member Justin Small plays in Lullabye Arkestra and Charles Spearin plays in Broken Social Scene.
Do Make Say Think’s music has been featured in the films, ‘The Corporation’ (2003) and ‘Syriana’ (2005).
The CD is available in a delux 6-panel cardstock jacket and the LP is pressed on 180g virgin vinyl.

Tracklist:
1. Bound To Be That Way  2. A With Living  3. The Universe!  4. A Tender History In Rust  5. Herstory Of Glory  6. You, You’re Awesome  7. Executioner Blues  8. In Mind

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'it's like I'm the farmhand and you're my animals.'
