The Thee More Shallows
album is here!! Book of Bad Dreams is here on CD at the (vinyl to follow).
Initially I was disappointed by this but after a few listens the disappointment
was replaced with a feeling of partial enjoyment. I've heard it a good few times
and it's not as immediate as the previous albums but it has it's moments and you
can definitely tell it's them though the vocals do sound different. If you
haven't heard 'em before they sounds like a more adventurous Grandaddy...
there's a lot more going on and it's quite experimental in a way whilst still
retaining the all important 'tune'! It's not a patch on either of the
previous albums but persevere with it and there's joy to be had. Not as much as
I'd hoped though. I can see why Anticon have signed these though... at times I
can hear bits of Why? in there as well with it's quirkyness... It fits on
Anticon quite nicely in fact. I'm gonna need to spend more time with this....

On ‘Book of Bad Breaks’, the full-length follow-up to 2005’s well-loved
‘More Deep Cuts’ LP, the Thee More Shallows trio takes a minimal
approach to Dee Kesler’s precisely arranged, near-orchestral post- pop.
The
album moves fluidly in and out of dark, rich pop and cold, distorted
atmosphere. ‘Eagle Rock’ recalls the pacing of a Blonde Redhead dirge,
all dark chord progressions coming up for a glimpse of light, then
diving back to some proggy epic depth. Standout track ‘The Dutch Fist’
plays like some dirty Modest Mouse cut through with a little Why?, its
chorus aping Bowie as the track’s muffled bounce rides out the groovy
undercurrent of a new indie anthem.
The album features breaks and beats from Anticon’s Odd Nosdam.
The vinyl pressing is a very special limited edition of only 1000 for the world.
