What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.

Fat Cat seem to churn out new releases like there's no tomorrow and yet the quality control for the best part is consistently high. For their latest release Nina Nastasia has collaberated with Drummer Jim White (Dirty Three) and called their fun collag You Follow Me. His drums sound totally live, I suspect Steve Albini may be at the controls. They add a little more drama to proceedings. Although her voice is pure drama in itself. She definitely stands out from the current female singer songwriter scene. I'd like to see her having a cat fight with Joanna Newsom. The lyrics are of that highly personal nature and her voice genuinely heartwarming. The percussion on 'The discussion' is off kilter but somehow just works. A fine example of how two very different musicains can work together in what sounds like a very natural pairing and compliment each other perfectly. (If you're after a wee comparison then think of a slightly less agitated Shannon Wright circa the Dyed In The Wool album.... it's those beefy drums you see! P x)

What the label says:

Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed 2006 solo LP ‘On Leaving’ comes ‘You Follow Me’, a collection of all new songs recorded by the duo of Nina Nastasia & Dirty Three’s Jim White.  Jim White has become a guest musician of choice for acts such as Will Oldham, Bonnie Prince Billy, Smog and Nick Cave, to mention but a few.  ‘You Follow Me’ is once again a vehicle for Nina’s rare gift of a voice, and her concise, hook-laden songwriting, surrounding themes of love, longing and loss, childhood, dreams and human dramas. Augmented by peerless drummer Jim White, it is nevertheless a very different record, and one that documents two musicians at the height of their powers, somewhere between a duel and a dance.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
