What we say
This record left our Ant feeling happy.
OOOOoooh it's been a bit since I had anything to review on Resonant.. I think it was that Yellow6 CD... Playing at the moment is 'Similar Anniversaries' by Small Sails. I almost mistook the name for small snails. Speaking of which they're was the biggest slug I've ever seen scoffing leaves in the front garden the other day. It was proper massive my little boy said it was a snake. I reckon it's one of those new euro-slugs... Returning to this album I'm reminded at times of Tuung with the playful organic feel At times magical and uplifting. It has that Resonant vibe and the whole thing just feels good. Pretty, dreamy music that at times sparkles with heart warming joy.
What the label says:
The suddenly prolific Resonant label delivers this charming debut album from Portland, Oregon-based music and film-making quartet Small Sails - released on top of new albums from label big-hitters port-royal and Stafraenn Hakon. Known for their frequent and startling live shows - whereby the interplay between the visuals (they number a 16mm film projectionist amongst their members) and the music comes into its own - their reputation in North America is solid. Best described as post-electronic, "Similar Anniversaries" features ten playful, whimsical, contemplative, organic compositions with hummed, half-audible vocals accentuating the guitar lines and sublime electronic melodies, in turn managing to achieve the rare feat of transporting the listener into a netherworld of imaginary fields, waterfalls, birds and the like. Ultimately, their music is warm and welcoming, unlike that of many of their contemporaries, and this is a truly delightful and thoroughly accomplished album, with songs that instantly seem familiar. Likely to appeal to fans of The Books, The Album Leaf, Caribou et al.
