What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Bright Eyes inflict a 7" picture disc on to me. It's called Hot Knives and it's numbered... they're the 2 strong points about this...it's all downhill from here. I've heard countless records by 'em and they don't do it all for me. I just don't get 'em. But then I don't like cheese and apparently that's weird. Would you trust a man who didn't like cheese??

What the label says:

BRIGHT EYES RELEASE DOUBLE A-SIDE SINGLE “HOT KNIVES” BACKED WITH “IF THE BRAKEMAN TURNS MY WAY” ON LTD EDITION NUMBERED 7” PICTURE DISC

HEADLINE DATES: LONDON’S SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE 3RD & 4TH JULY, BIRMINGHAM ACADEMY 6TH JULY

FESTIVAL DATES: GLASTONBURY, T IN THE PARK & OXYGEN

“Conor Oberst is the most gifted and intelligent lyricist under 30 working in America – and possibly anywhere – today” – The Independent *****
“A great American song-writer” – Mojo
“Conor Oberst’s transition from folkie to global tunesmith is complete” – NME

Fresh from blazing a trail through North America on a 6 week tour which culminated in a triumphant 7 night residency at New York’s Town Hall (where BE were joined on stage by guests such as Lou Reed, Jenny Lewis, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ben Kweller, Steve Earle and Norah Jones to name a few), Bright Eyes will return to the UK at the end of June for an appearance at Glastonbury Festival. In July they release the second single, a double A-side with “Hot Knives” and “If The Brakeman Turns My Way” (out 9th July) from current album “Cassadaga” (Top 15 in the UK, Top 5 in the U.S.), play T in The Park and Oxygen festivals and two headline shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire and another at Birmingham’s Academy.

“Like Arcade Fire and Thom Yorke, Oberst is another pop weather-vane fearlessly contemplating imminent calamity…when Oberst is at his most poetic – and “Hot Knives” is riveting - he has the authority of a Leonard Cohen…”- The Observer CD Of The Week

The 5-piece Bright Eyes live line-up that we saw in March for 2 intimate shows at London’s KoKo and Oxford Brookes Uni (core members Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, plus drummer Rachel Blumberg, violinist Anton Patzner and guitarist Jake Bellows) has swelled ranks for the current tour dates to a white-suit-wearing 12-piece with a string and woodwind section and additional guest drummer Janet Weiss (ex-Sleater Kinney).

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'have you got your onions?'
