What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

A double CD by 90's legends The Tindersticks with BBC Sessions. They are a band that's passed me by but listening to them now i can see why my friends were obsessed with them back in the day. The music is theatrical dark and brooding and lead singer Stuart Staples rich distinctive voice wavers over the whole job. Enough ideas and moods to sink a house boat. 25 tunes all for your aural pleasure. Sounds a bit like Lloyd Cole (Phil thinks Vic Reeves pub singer)

What the label says:

After self-releasing several well-received singles, Tindersticks became darlings of the mainstream British and alternative American press with the 1993 release of their eponymously titled debut album. Moving from classically-tinged ballads, chaotic rockers with plenty of cacophonous dissonance, and simple, yet captivating pop gems, the band proved that an album with twenty songs could maintain a consistent vision without becoming repetitive.
Where their contemporaries were often direct and to the point, Tindersticks were obtuse and leisurely, crafting dense, difficult songs layered with literary lyrics, intertwining melodies, mumbling vocals, and gently melancholy orchestrations. Essentially, the group filtered the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, and Scott Walker as filtered through the bizarre pop songcraft of Lee Hazlewood and the aesthetics of indie rock and With each successive record, the band upped the orchestral ante without compromising melody, subtlety or mood.
They appeared in many end of year Best of’s throughout the 90s and performed a staggering array of concerts, releasing their Live at the Bloomsbury Theatre performance having employed a 28-piece orchestra.
This double cd contains 25 of their BBC In Session recordings made between 1993-1997, selected by the band. The artwork was designed by Stuart Staples and sleeve notes written by David Boulter. It is a marvelous insight into the changing styles and development of the band during that time and offers previously unreleased versions of tracks from some of their most critically acclaimed albums.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
