What we say
This record left our Maggie feeling ecstatic.
Nancy Elizabeth with an astounding new single Hey Son on Leaf. Starting from the seed of a pure female voice and guitar, it slowly builds taking in a great choppy guitar action until finally we're in a wall of pagan intensity and tribal beats. Makes me want to strip off, paint up and dance round the campfire high on lead from the cheap market paint. Its a beauty!! B-sides a droning Celtic sounding song on accordion which reminds us of Beth Orton. Yes,a lovely peaceful acorn of a release... numbered of 600 copies on leaf records. (ps we still have some copies of her debut left!) A great little 7"
What the label says:
‘Hey Son’ is the haunting first single from The Leaf Label’s latest signing, Nancy Elizabeth, giving us a dramatic taste of the delights to come on her debut album, Battle and Victory, to be released in September. The single will be available as a download, and in a limited edition of 600 numbered 7” singles for the world.
Packing a lot into its three minutes and 20 seconds, the dynamic ‘Hey Son’ opens with a Davy Graham-inspired guitar figure and Nancy’s unmistakably Northern voice, building to a crescendo of crashing percussion and dense vocal harmonies. The B-side song (exclusive to this release) is the evocative ‘Live By The Sea’, a recording of just Nancy’s voice and the churning drone of an Indian harmonium.
The 23-year-old Wigan-born singer has been writing and performing since she was 14. She has played more than 50 gigs around the UK in the last year alone, including slots with A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Tunng and James Yorkston among others. She is currently putting together a small touring group to augment her already much-loved acoustic ‘one-girl-band’ shows which feature primarily Celtic harp and acoustic guitar.
