Various Artists: 'Brazil 70' After Tropicalia- New Directions (Soul Jazz), updates Soul Jazz's brilliantly curated compilation of last year which covered much of the highlights of the movement's music of the 1960's. The lineage here covers developments throughout the 1970's and the influence of western Pop, Rock and Soul/Disco productions fused with Samba, Jazz, Bossa Nova & other Brazilian folk traditions to concoct a heady brew of infectious rhythmatic constructions, uplifting vocals and tropical hedonism. Includes little heard tunes by Nelson Angelo & Joyce, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Rita Lee of Os Mutantes amongst the lesser known artists compiled. The tropicalia movement itself was a cultural wave that encompassed other artforms like: poetry, architecture, painting, sculpture and film, which is well worth investigating through the sleeve notes of this LP and the previous collection. The vinyl has 16 tracks while the CD clocks in at a mighty 19 tracks. Really quite a brilliant exposition of developments of one strand of Latin culture.

What the label says:

Brazil 70’ follows Brazilian music in the 1970s in the aftermath of ‘Tropicalia’ and as the country’s dictatorship entered its most oppressive phase. Musicians and artists from the ‘Tropicalia’ period of the late-60s such as Gilberto Gil, Rita Lee (Os Mutantes lead-singer) and Gal Costa entered a new phase mixing rock, funk, samba and soul alongside a wealth of like-minded new artists such as Novos Baianos, Raul Seixas, Nelson Angelo & Joyce and more.  This album features an all-star line up of all the key artists featured on the first album: Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Gal Costa, Rita Lee (Os Mutantes) and carries on exactly where the first CD left off.Vinyl comes on super-loud DJ pressing.
