This record left Matthew feeling ecstatic.
“Like the music you hear in your head” Audience member GoNorth 2007 “In support we have an incredible act, 7VWWVW are a little bit different in all accounts of song structure and production. With an exciting live show and a stimulating sound, they cross borders of organic electronica like no other, fuelling the listener with ghostly sonic waves and panoramic production.” N.E.M.I.S. December 2006 “Mammal are a 21st century band, and the sum of their record collection…” Is this music?September 2007 “Refreshingly free of guitar posturing… Wobbly analogue hip-hop crew mammal makes music that sounds like computer games, only they won’t want you to make you throw your television out the window.” The List2005 “The use of the experimental electronica group 7VWWVW works better than the chorus, though the band do well not to look self-conconscious dressed as they are in pink tops and bottoms.” Edinburgh Guide.com‘I love you numb’ theatre review 2005 “…One good track is more than 95% of all recorded artists achieve! So here's a list – track 'em down on MySpace: …Old man Of the Woods- 7VWWVW…” Colin Newman EvilSponge 2006 “It’s a quietly deranged form of genius. Oh, and it’s single of the fortnight.” The List2005 “…just too quirky…” Is this music?September 2007 Review date: 03 October 2007
What we say
This record left our Maggie feeling happy.
Now 7VWWVW: 'S/T'
on Crystal Wish Records. We discovered that when you turn their name upside down
it spells Mammal like in a BOOBLESS kind of way. It is another synth retro
electronic journey with electronic waves and pulses combing in computer space to
describe a day if you were a Mr Man. Phil says it sounds like Plone.. Ant says
it sounds like Plone.... Mingus says it sounds like Plone. The odd bit of
singing drift in and out in a Hood style way to add to the quite original vibe
it's pushing out. Recently supported the Aliens it says on the press
release
What the label says:
7VWWVW: 7VWWVW
7VWWVW is Mammal. Mammal is 7VWWVW because there are many Mammals. As far as we are aware there is only one 7VWWVW. Although 7VWWVW are four. Understand?
7VWWVW was borne from the wombs of pre-post-punk radges Javelin and reggae leisure devotees Co-optimist; both Edinburgh units, devoted to putting and end to the humdrum world of ‘bands’. The unison project proved fruitful and Mammal was invented, swiftly encoded to 7VWWVW to throw off those incapable of turning a piece of paper upside down.
Although a devoted live band, 7VWWVW prefer to remain elusive, picking selective gigs and never plunging into the world of midweek gigs to empty houses. This policy paid off when they were hand- picked to join The Aliens on their first tour of their homeland last year.
7VWWVW have recently completed a full length recording, with help from dear friend and producer Bryan Mills, who learned studio craft from none other than Kevin Shields, widely considered to be the producer’s producer: Together they created the soundtrack to the film Lost In Translation. Other luminaries Bryan has previously shared the control room with are Robin Guthrie and Nigel Godrich. Taking 7VWWVW into Edinburgh’s Chamber Studio to record to 2” tape was the perfect solution to the conundrum of catching their sound. Considering the entirety of 7VWWVW’s kit is either 80s or pre-80s analogue, it seems appropriate to use the techniques and outboard equipment that were standard in the pre-digital age. Although the majority of compositions are instrumental, all tell stories. Many evoke the drama and melancholic nature of wildlife so dear to the band, some recount experiences, some cope with loss and desolation. Some even celebrate! In four years of writing, performing and touring, 7VWWVW have at the good fortune to become acquainted with some of their own personal musical icons. Tim Green from the Fucking Champs, Colin Newman from Wire (who listed 7VWWVW’s tune ‘Old Man of the Woods’ in his top 10 myspace songs for 2007), Philadelphia ‘next big things’ Plastic Little who intend to use a 7VWWVW tune on their next LP, to name but a few. Radio 1 has played songs from the debut album on both local Scottish and National Network shows in the last month. ‘7VWWVW’ is available online at itunes and all the usual download sites. The LP Vinyl will be released in late September on the band’s own Crystal Wish label, but is available currently on pre-release special order via the Crystal Wish myspace site: myspace.com/crystalwishrecords. Finally, a CD of the album will be released by Edinburgh’s KFM Records at the end of October. 7VWWVW are currently composing a score for a Scottish short film entitled ‘My Head Kissed The Ground’. 'A quietly deranged form of genius - 5/5.' The List Magazine 'One of the top 20 tunes of 2007' Colin Newman (Wire)
