What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus Rude feeling unmoved.

Jack Penate: 'Matinee' (XL) Debut outing from the man tipped as 'the next big thing'. I can't decide whether he's a over hyped busker or public schoolboy fopp slumming it with the indie toilet kids. On hearing the opening track he comes across like a male version of Kate Nash. Part rockabilly, part busker- faux trailer trash chic.Does he really talk in that wierd Thames Valley/sub-mockney accent? well he sings like that...You like Jamie T, Kate Nash then maybe you've already been sold on this & my words aren't worth a toss.

What the label says:

Jack Peñate’s head is full of incredible pop songs and over the last year and a bit he’s been bewitching sold out audiences with them, striking a real chord nationwide and making quite a name for himself. His most recent single, ‘Torn On The Platform’, went straight in to the Top Ten, confirming what we all knew already – Jack is a natural. Recorded and produced by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Kasabian), ‘Matinée’ is heavy. Forming its core are his three singles to date – the summer swagger of ‘Spit At Stars’, the now anthemic ‘Torn On The Platform’ and his most recent opus, ‘Second, Minute Or Hour’, which captures a gutsy Jack performing at a breakneck speed. With his deserved reputation for breathless live shows, fans will be happy that live stalwarts making the cut include ‘Learning Lines’ (the only track on the album produced by Philadelphian electronic maestro RJD2), the contented Jack in ‘Got My Favourite’ and ‘Made Of Codes’, a bluesy stomper that mutates into a glorious, three minute indie-pop masterclass.Where a lot of his songs are full of wonder and hope, there’s a deeper side to the young man. For instance, the lovelorn lament of ‘My Yvonne’ (which features fellow rising star Adele on backing vocals), the string laden epic ‘We Will Be Here’ and the intricate, lo-fi strumming of album closer ‘When We Die’, which was recorded at St. Barnabus church in Ealing with a gospel backing, all show this guy has got soul.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

They even checked their logs to see if they could find a trace of it but nothing came out...
