What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Wooden Shjips were a bit of find for us lately. That album rules..... Sub Pop know a good thing when they see it and they've picked 'em up to do a 7" called 'Loose Lips'. This is some well spacey psyched out gear with a Loop -esque beat and phased guitars along with some Jim Morrison sounding vocals. They're really low down in the mix so you can't hear on earth what he's saying and there's some echoey thing on his voice 'n all. Cock knows. It's good anyway. You need some Wooden Shjips in your life!

What the label says:

Sub Pop 7” vinyl : Wooden Shjips is a quartet from San Francisco that plays loud rock ‘n’ roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism, and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums (Omar Ahsanuddin), bass (Dusty Jermier), organ (Nash
Whalen), guitar (Erik “Ripley” Johnson), and vocals. The band released two acclaimed records in 2006, beginning early in the year with the self-released 10”, “Shrinking Moon for You”. The record quickly sold-out, after capturing the attention of well-regarded tastemakers, such as Tom Lax and Byron Coley, who penned rave reviews on Siltblog, and in Wire magazine, respectively. A 7” followed on the Sick Thirst label, and received similar praise from music bloggers, as well as from veteran scribe David Fricke in Rolling Stone.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
