What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Who? feeling happy.

Data 70: 'Space Loops Volume Two' (Enraptured) A ten track, yes ten tracks! DJ tool of sorts that contains little interludes and snippets of mainly analogue keyboard sounds; you know bleeps, bloops. On the flip some of the sounds get a bit more tonal with hissy stactic waves, distortion and queasy listening tones. Collectors of library music will know doubt appreciate the kistch value, turntablists and sound art afficiandos will find practical and cerebal pleasures... (this is great! analog electronic sounds for fans of Raymond Scott, Radiophonic Orchestra etc.... blue wax and the best thing Enraptured have put out for years!- Phil)

What the label says:

‘Space Loops Volume Two’ is the second instalment and one of the most unusual pieces of music ever circulated in the UK!
Comprised of ambient sound sculptors Bob Bhamra (West Norwood Cassette Library) and Jon Chambers (Sunray), Data 70’s ‘Space Loops Volume Two’ follows on the success of ‘Space Loops Volume One’, released in March 2005 and featuring loops created from messages reflected – or perhaps returned – from the cosmos. In the mid-nineteenth century, the amateur German astronomer Ralph Welderich took to methodically plotting the incandescent showers of meteor storms in the night-time atmosphere. Exposing himself almost exclusively to the radiance of these cosmological fireworks for over twenty years, Welderich created thousands of scatter charts of the burning trails of space dust and the pixelated waves of meteor outbursts. Gradually, Welderich began to discern patterns in his coordinates – mathematical curves, geometric images, and harmonic repetitions. Could these filaments in the night sky be ablaze with meaning? Unexamined for over a century and a half, Welderich’s notebooks came into the possession of Chamber’s brother-in-law, who discovered them in a mouldering crate in his late grandfather’s neglected neo-gothic observatory and being of no interest to him, passed them on. The Data 70 duo excitedly set to work mapping Welderich’s charts into data that could be fired into an analogue oscilloscope, and outputting the signals through a complex network of vintage synthesizers to make audible these unique meteoric nocturnes. The result is a set of introspective drone collages, weaving tiny melodies and delicate phase and drone hypnotically into the void. As mesmerizing as the meteor storms that gave them the blaze of life, and as disquietingly bursting with meaning as Welderich’s patterns, ‘Space Loops Volume Two’ truly is the sound of the firmament.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

They even checked their logs to see if they could find a trace of it but nothing came out...
