This record left Melissa. feeling ecstatic.
I really love it. I don't think I can go through a day without listening to the wombats. They are creative and the topics they sing about are unusual but definitely interesting and easy to understand. This album makes me feel ECSTATIC. I look forward to hearing more from the 'bats. Cheers. Review date: 04 August 2008

OVERVIEW: 14th Floor Records are proud to present the magnificent, eagerly awaited debut album by Liverpool's favourite trio, 'The Wombats proudly present…A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation', out on 5th November 2007. Produced by the band with Stephen Harris (Kaiser Chiefs, Ben Kweller) and mixed by Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand), the album's release is preceded by the riotous single 'Let's Dance To Joy Division'. Both album formats contain a special 2-sided poster, rather than the traditional CD booklet. A limited special edition is available with a bonus DVD disc, containing all the music videos and two hilarious documentaries. The docs capture the boys rise to fame, with plenty of backstage, never-before-seen exploits and capers. '…A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation' is an astoundingly accomplished debut; a collection of, irresistibly catchy songs, all shot through with infectious Scouse wit. From the dancefloor-filling scuzz-pop of 'Moving To New York' to the off-kilter waltz of 'Party In A Forest (Where's Laura?)', The Wombats lyrics deal in despair of the most danceable kind. Sometimes anchored firmly in melancholy (the lilting 'Little Miss Pipedream') and with others that have the immediacy and high-octane fun of a loveable indie romp ('My First Wedding'), it's clear that The Wombats have made a debut that far exceeds the weighty expectations already upon them. The indie-pop single 'Let's Dance To Joy Division' was chosen by Jo Whiley as her 'Pet Sound' (Record of The Week) on Radio 1 six weeks upfront of release, and was Alex Zane's Breakfast Show Record of the Week on XFM. The track was also the NME Single of The Week! The Wombats previous single release, 'Kill The Director', is the theme music for Football Focus this season. The band appeared on Sky's Soccer AM and are performing on Transmission, C4. They have also been chosen to perform on the first show of the BBC's new music programme, Sound, with Annie Mac. The Wombats have built up an enormous live following and were the first unsigned act to sell out the Liverpool Academy. Their shows are known for the mayhem that ensues; with ebullient fans crashing the stage to dance and sing with their heroes.
