What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Ed feeling unmoved.

The Blakes: 'Two Times' (Light In The Attic) These Blokes hahahaha do a growling, shrieking take on the barroom bluesy pub rock beloved of dads most everywhere. Not nescesarily your dad or my dad but, you know someones dad who likes generic rock in boots and jeans. The flipside immeaditely reminds us our favourite scouse moptops. Fans of Dipso Maniacs will love the sixties take on the cliche by numbers rock formulae.

What the label says:

* Who's this? This shit is good! (Iggy Pop)
* Soak the Kinks in cheap booze, reignite the Stooges' strut...gritty-yet-hazy rock music. (SPIN)

* Swampy guitars, twitchy rhythms, and power-pop vocal harmonies! (PitchforkMedia.com)

* Breakout stars. (Filter Magazine)

THE BLAKES...
Garnet Keim — guitar, vocals
Snow Keim — bass, vocals
Bob Husak — drums
The Blakes, praised by Pitchfork for their "swampy guitars, twitchy rhythms and power pop vocal harmonies", recall the stinging catchiness of early Who, Kinks, and other spitfire rock bands.
With the influences of Hank Williams and Brian Wilson hanging from their sleeves, brothers Garnet and Snow Keim busked across America, scribbling songs in hostels and motel bathrooms, en route to Seattle.  There they met animalistic, drummer Bob Husak in a local coffee shop, and The Blakes were born.  The dynamic threesome hit the road and have been bringing gritty rock and roll to the masses ever since.   Mixed and mastered by Martin Feveyear (Kings of Leon, Cornershop, Mudhoney), the band's UK/EU debut has arrived in the form of a limited edition 7" single featuring the raucous growl of  "Two Times" and the poppy burst of non-album b-side "Die." Lookout for the full-length in Spring 2008.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'Seriously, it was an Abba carrier bag.'
