What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

Lightspeed Champion: 'Falling Off The Lavender Bridge' (Domino) In which Domino indulge the former Testiscicles frontman Dev Hynes with his debut long player that may not delight the indie faithful, but please the folk loving convertees. His songwriting skills are very much in evidence and this is backed up with some clever arrangements and considered production wich kinda reigns in some of the wayward words -maybe there's too much- that seem to fight for space. That said the inclusion of one Emmy the Great on backing vocals helps flesh out said waywardness. Listening to this after the Cat Power covers collection makes me think all this serious singer-songwriter approach, backed with a countrified jangle and swing is catered to a kind of populous, all bases covered approach. Those familiar with his other (joke) attempt at the massmarket would probably laugh at the slide guitar and swooping strings. Destined for early evening playlists- think Radio 2, this is all very serious and earnest methinks but strong, challenging and stimulating for this eccentric looking original black indie boy. Good stuff.
