What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Probably my fave Fat Cat band (who strangely enough have featured on Unlabel) are Charlottefield. A new 8 track LP 'What are Friends For' has crashed into my face, screaming & rumbling & crashing all over my conscience. This is the real deal. Intricate, deranged post hardcore with a grudge to bear. opening with a right off kilter grumble-fest full of bendy guitars, pummeling math-core drums & a psychotic yell of a vocal, it takes a step down in pace on 'Late Repeat' whilst still bending your sanity with tight time changes. Yes this band are keeping the whole discordant angular mess-rock thing going in rude fashion. It reminds me of those great Ligament gigs and bands like Bob Tilton & Fabric. Bet that poor singer has to bathe his throat in liquid strepsils after a show. The guitars come at you like a caustic maelstrom, the bass is up there with The Jesus Lizard & the drums are just tight as a gnat's chuff. Excellent music that follows NO trends but it's own thrilling vitality! LP with CD to follow real soon, possibly next week.

What the label says:

A somewhat enigmatic proposition by current UK standards, sounding refreshingly out of step with current trends, Charlottefield’s second album is still undoubtedly informed by post-hardcore and post-punk experimentalism, yet bears witness to a band clearly focused on extending their sonic palette. ‘What Are Friends For’ builds on the anglicised post-hardcore foundations of their previous album ‘How Long Are You Staying’.Utilising a familiar four-piece, dual guitar, bass, drums and vocals template, Charlottefield’s oeuvre is stripped of extraneous musical frippery, focusing instead on rhythmic, structural and textural detail; a constantly shifting dialogue between a democratic band.An instinctive live act, as comfortable on stage as they are off, Charlottefield have recently toured with Yourcodenameismilo, opened for The Go! Team, and shared the stage with Blood Red Shoes, Animal Collective, and Victorian English Gentlemens Club, as well as the likes of Don Caballero and Wolf Eyes.
