What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our BRIAN D feeling ecstatic.

Dave Cloud. Wonder if he lives on one? He's the modern version of Captain Beefheart. Love his stuff, total rambling crazy head he is. I remember this track off of his album 'Napoleon of Temperance' innit, where he's ranting about being a "Puff Rider", he's out cruising for girls, muttering throatily about his dog "poochie" & his cat named "boom". So, ain't heard it in a couple o' years, this crazy ass song, right, and then this fucking 7" crashes into my face with THAT mentalist track on. Like a musical version of a Robert Crumb comic strip, the original is like a lo-fi chicago house thing left in the gutter to be pissed on by a tramp. Then, right, Cloudy's come bezzin' along one morning and found this mangled, disheveled cassette & dried it out, then done a rap over it after a couple of sloe gins & a jazz cigarette. Yeah man. Then, to top it all, trendy Nathan Barley-esque remix kingpins Various do an ace re-jig with old skool hip hop feelings & one of those wibbly Tom Tom Club keyboard thangs popping it's spangled head up every few bars. Ltd 7" on Fire. We were gonna give PJ 'Arvey SOTW but then this scuzzy bugger kicked us in the balls. OOOOOOOOOOOOh yeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

What the label says:

THE FIRE RECORDS/VARIOUS PRODUCTION PARTNERSHIP IN DARK MASH-UP CONTINUES ON FROM VP’S DARK-AS-A-HAUNTED-CAVE REMIX OF GERRY MITCHELL AND LITTLE SPARTA’S FEASTING ON MY HEART, AND THEIR REMIX OF LABELMATES PUERTO MUERTO’S BOY.3.29

THIS TIME AROUND IS MORE UPBEAT (RELATIVELY SPEAKING), AS EVIDENT IN BONESY’S MORE PLAYFULLY DISTURBING COVER.  SONICALLY, IT’S NASTY RATHER THAN DARK; IT’S A STORMER OF ELECTRO-POPPING STOMP WARPED BY DAVE CLOUD’S CHARACTERISTIC BREATHY AND GRAVELLY VOCALS AND ATTITUDE.  THE LO-FI ORIGINAL ON SIDE B (FROM LAST YEAR’S NAPOLEAN OF TEMPERANCE) IS A DISTORTED DISCO CLASSIC KARAOKED BY A LOOSE-SCREW GENIUS,
AND IS A FAVOURITE OF STOOL PIGEON DJS.

DAVE AND THE BOYS WILL BE RETURNING TO SCARE EUROPEANS IN EARLY 2008, IN SUPPORT OF THE STREAMLINE PUNCH OF THE NEW ALBUM, INCLUDING A TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO BERGENFEST, WHERE DAVE HAD A CLUB NAMED AFTER HIM IN 2006 WHILST PLAYING A RESIDENCY FOR THE FESTIVAL (WELCOME TO “DAVE CLOUD’S CLUB EL MORROCO”!).

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'if you can’t be the song, let the song be.'
