What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Phil feeling unmoved.

Hot tip for world domination is Adele with her debut album 19. Fortunately I've just bought my brand new enormous coffee table and I'm gonna put it in the middle of the road as that is where this music lies. Sure she's got a great voice which 'sounds' very soul.. I wouldn't knock that. The girl can sing and she seems top be able to string a song together. She does have a very similar warble to Amy Winehouse and I suspect she'll be appealing to the same mob of fans out there. All I can think of is Jools Holland and Mojo... She is so gonna be on 'Later with the Gremlin' every week...... and on the cover of every Mojo for eternity... presuming she can knock Cat Power and get her huge ass off the cover. Mumrock for the masses.... I'm gonna get me a vinyl of this when it comes out and leave it on my coffee table as vinyl is well retro. Ooh what big coasters you have Phil?? 'They match my big coffee table you know....' Wetro.

What the label says:

Already the winner of a Brit Award (Adele was voted the ‘Critics Choice’ - the most exciting new British artist expected to ‘make it big’ in 2008), ‘19’ is Adele’s debut album.   Citing her influences as diverse as Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, The Cure and Peggy Lee, Adele also recently completed her first solo UK tour, having toured previously with the likes of Jack Penate, Jamie T, Raul Midon, Amos Lee and Devendra Banhart. She will be playing a selection of dates between now and January, including headlining at Blue Flowers at the George IV in Chiswick, London on December 16th.‘19’ contains both her debut track ‘Hometown Glory’ and her forthcoming single ‘Chasing Pavements’.  Blues tinged and melancholic, Adele describes ‘Chasing Pavements’ as "It's me being hopeful for a relationship that's very much over. The sort of relationship you hate when you're in it, but miss when you're not".  A hymn to lost love and regret, ‘Chasing Pavements’ follows Adele’s first limited edition single ‘Hometown Glory’, which introduced her to the world to much critical acclaim, with NME calling it “totally, absolutely beautiful”, Q Magazine calling her “The voice of next year”, The Sunday Times saying “A Star Is Born” and Elle commenting “she has a songbook as broken hearted as Leonard Cohen’s”.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.

'That's just what pop should be like. Loud, fast and very exciting.'
