What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Also catching my ear is this CD by Rings on Paw Tracks called 'Black Habit'. Searching for a reference i'd say a female Animal Collective with a hint of Bat For Lashes, thankyou Phil. It's eerie, gothic, dramatic & quirky gear. Spectral & minimal with vague vocals buried under skittering percussion, deep piano rolls, spidery snatches of guitar.....there's a bit of an Electrelane feel in the looseness & wonky female harmonies. Obviously Kate Bush is an influence here as well as subtle references to varios mercurial & esoteric no wave & post-punk femmes. This music is weird, abstract, tribal & lo-fi. At times it borders on cavernlike sinister, like Liars jamming with some drunk witches. Stringed instruments, possibly violins & the like are heard being quietly bludgeoned under the scratchy percussive mantra whilst all sorts of disjointed wailing occurs. The pianos on this album are lovely, cyclical bursts of purity, battling with all kinds off freeform madness. This is definately one for folks who dig Leopard Leg & The New Sound of Numbers. I think this could just grow & grow. Spooky indeed!

What the label says:

First Nation has become Rings. Rings is the new First Nation. Described by Uncut as "Animal Collective’s girl
counterparts" , this is their new record. It is called ‘Black Habit’.
New York’s First Nation was Nina Mehta, Kate Rosko, and Melissa Livaudais. Melissa left; Abby Portner (sister of Animal Collective’s Dave Portner) joined. The new trio decided to make a clean break and rename the band.
Released on Paw Tracks, Animal Collective’s label, Black Habit delivers in a major way. Rings have clearly developed their own style: a loose tribal pop sound that thrives on vocal harmonies and pulsating drum rhythms. Black Habit’s energy is full of beauty, elegance and simplicity.
Nina sums up, ’Rings is a name for our circular compositions, the bonds between us, our decision-making processes, and the circular shapes around us, interlocking, connected, feminine, whole, continuous...’
