What we say

Rating: happy This record left our mings feeling happy.

Our Sleepless Forest: S/T (Resonant) Has got everyone raising their voices in the office as it's like an ambient, shoegazing library in here. The echoes echo, the guitar sounding electronics shimmer and the back beat shuffles in a percussive, overwound clock kinda way. This is like the methodone electronica produced by those wonderful lads from Ampoule.Talk in the office is gone onto re-branding or reverse-branding. Apparently Opal Fruits are to revert back to Starbursts. This is possibly all in the effort to see enough coffers implode the profits of the corporate monsters Nestle. This will only leave the kids that know no better scoffing; 'Whats that? where's me Starbursts?'. What this has got to do with Our Sleepless Forest you ask? Nowt I tell thee, it's just a diversionary tactic to keep you interested and halt this tired scribe from saying the same stuff about the same sort of fare...so therein lies a connection maybe. Beautifully packaged- in tree cover with sunbursts peaking through. It's a bit lush if you like sweet, druggy effects without the E numbers. You could just go and buy some sweets. Buy this and we'll send some with it. Don't bill us for your dentist fee though.

What the label says:

Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a
frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their first full
release, having had an early version of album track 'The Tinderbox' included
on the Type Records 'Free The Future' compilation.

Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started
experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and
basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the
aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with
something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by
others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track,
45-minute debut that is comparable to any in this field in recent times.

Our Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet
dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build melodies
are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent at times of
the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there moments but on the
whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated with music of this
genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard.

Press to follow; opening track 'Nomads' was played by Mary Anne Hobbs a
couple of months back, and influential Manchester-based website Angry Ape
have lined up an interview with the band.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
