What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Make Mine Music head into slightly darker territory with a limited CD (edition of 50) by Still Crescent. 'The Railway Terminus, The October Twilight, The Circulatory System' is the chilling sound of icy winter weather and isolationist dark ambient. This is the work of Sébastien Wright (August Stars). I get a very slight hint of dub at times echoing away in the background. This is really slow moving cinematic ambient. If you've not frozen your knackers off during the winter then whack this on and get lost in the arctic. I got a bit scared at one point during this and thought I was about to be attacked by a yeti. Hehehe! the abominable snowman.

What the label says:

he first Make Mine Music release of 2008 is the debut EP by Still Crescent, entitled "The Railway Terminus, The October Twilight, The Circulatory system".

Still Crescent is the new moniker of Sébastien Wright, whose previous releases on Make Mine Music came out under the name August Stars. August Stars' two EPs "Music for Twilight" and "Midwinter" garnered praise for their unsettling and chilling ambience; with Still Crescent, Sébastien takes these sounds further into darker territory, with the debut EP offering up 30 minutes of desolate, unsettling and highly atmospheric ambience.  The EP is largely a product of Sébastien working shifts, both literally and in terms of the sound of the EP - largely recorded in the small hours of the night after completing evening shifts, the EP's tracks capture the strange sense of dislocation and social isolation that one can feel, especially during the long winter months.  For those who remember the classic Virgin compilation "Isolationism", Still Crescent wouldn't have sounded out of place on there.

Explaining the change of name, Sébastien notes that he felt that August Stars represented a particular sound, whereas Still Crescent allows him to explore different textures, sounds and recording techniques.  August Stars' long-delayed "Drawn Away" EP will be released on Make Mine Music later in the year, as will a second Still Crescent EP.

About the humble CD single:

Another digital format and even though they can hold 80 minutes of information (like a CD album would) record companies only fill up a small portion of the disc. Sometimes only 1 or 2 tracks on there totalling 5 minutes or so. It's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of food with 2 green beans on and wondering where the rest of your meal is. Sometimes they're lovingly packaged though and when the music is good then you're into a winner. Also you get videos on there sometimes which you can watch on your computer. That is excellent.
