What we say
This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.
Thank goodness i'm lucky enough to have the antidote here in my chubby boyfist. The ever absorbing Kranky label unleash 'Naked Acid' by Valet. If you want moody chasms of enveloping spaced out ambience, moonlit tribal minimalism, hushed & strange snippets of future psychedelia & disembodied stargazing free psych folk then Honey Owens is your lady. A member of the oft impenetrable Jackie O Motherfunner & electronic/experimental project Nudge, she sure knows how to ease you out into the twinkling night sky, sending you into a meandering orbit somewhere far away from city smog & the daily grind! You don't get away from Earth too far though as there's some lazy hazy witchy campfire blues overlaid with some hugely relaxing found sound samples ricocheting around like a cosmic game of cyber echo tennis in the background before it turns into a more feline & freeform take on Josh Homme's jam-tastic Desert sessions. There's even some rudimentary electronic exploration to come further down the line. A blissfully discordant & soothing album, full of wayward mantras to distract, tweaking your voodoo moods along the way! Great fun!
What the label says:
Kranky’s run of superlative albums continues (3 albums in The Wire’s Top 50 Records Of The Year 2007) with the second solo release from Portland artist Valet, aka Honey Owens, following up her widely lauded ‘Blood Is Clean’ album from early 2007, another trip through the fertile garden of her imagination. From the gentle narcotic haze of the album opener "We Went There", which is dissected by Honey’s trademark incendiary guitar work, to the lazy alien country blues of "Fuck It", and through the hyperventilating rhythmic distortion of the closer "Streets", Naked Acid is a fever dream of ghostly incantation and smudged psychedelia. Honey Owens (Valet) has collaborated with a number of well-known and obscure artists including Jackie-O Motherfucker and Nudge and has been an important figure in the Portland, Oregan experimental music scene for more than 10 years. "A beguiling, menadering combination of trancelike chants, pulsating drones and frazzled guitar doodles." The Wire
