What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Newcastle's Distraction label serve up another offering from d_rradio and this one's a good 'un. It's a full album worth of organic and synthetic sounds. Yes that's correct anyone following d_rradio has only had their mitts on singles so far (on static Caravan among other labels) so it is a real treat to get sat down and listen to their debut self titled album, packed with lush sounds, without getting up every 5 minutes to flip a record over. They have some great rhythms happening here, blissful melodies and a cool combination of familiar and new sounds. What I like about d_rradio is they way they manage to inject soul into the circuits. Although you're not going to be blown away here with cutting edge techno tricks they remember what is important in all good music. Emotion and human feeling flow through the soundwaves and sooth you into a satisfactory state of comfort. Proper pipe and slippers gear...

What the label says:

Three years in the making, this self-titled long player could be described as d_rradio's opus maximus. Their Static Caravan debut 'U_nderscore', set the bar dangerously high, gaining a solid reputation as a diamond in the rough among IDM and post-rock fans alike. Following on from last years flurry of 7" action on Distraction, the UK trio of dreamers present ten diverse tracks which boldly declare their eclectic vision and align to form a uniquely unified sound. This is a wholly different record to those previously released by d_rradio, leaving behind the tranquility for an adrenaline jab of sparkling, kinetic vibrancy and fluent rhythms. With influences coming from right across the spectrum d_rradio (pronounced D. R. Radio) have nailed this record with a heartfelt love of music of all genres as well as their desire to make a sound that is new. The result is something which feels comforting and familiar, but is completely their own creation. Elements and rhythms of every musical style fleetingly reveal themselves amid the textured wash of pristine electronic noise and d_rradio's melodic, yet often seemingly child-like instrumentation. Up, up and away...

There is something about the way d_rradio arrange space and hum and acoustic instruments and sheer grit that really blows away some stuff bearing surface similarities." The Wire  “d_rradio. . . I shall never forget that.  Wonderful.” John Peel

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
