Josh Weller is witty and funny without being a comedy act. He reminds me of Randy Newman Pretty Girls is a bittersweet pop anthem. Circus could be an a-side too. What the label says: Pretty Girls is the debut single from 21-year old London-based singer-songwriter Josh Weller. Framed in the context of a pretty, acoustic pop song with stings of melodica and a toe-tapping beat, the sunny vibe belies the song's stinging lyrics about the kind of girls who are "never nice 'cause they've been pretty all their lives." Someone, it seems, has been bruised before…"The song is written about one girl in particular," admits Josh. "I was punching well above my weight and she knew it." Unsurprisingly, given his lyrical zing, Weller is a fan of Elvis Costello, and a ringer for him too with a look that's part Buddy Holly, part Eraserhead. Memorably, NME once described him as a "tweedy troubador".

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
