What we say
This record left our Mingus feeling unmoved.
James Severy At The Circus Circus: 'Do The Circus Circus' (Art Goes Pop) Sounds like some sort of singer songwriter collision with wonky pianos, fuzzy washes and synthetic drum programming all topped off with observational themed songs. The lead tracks are two short blasts accompanied by guitar and delivered in a faux-heartfelt estuarary English. Fans of the likes of Jack Penate and folkies like Johnny Flynn will appreciate the honesty. Three tracks in total with eighteen minutes of music on a CD
What the label says:
Working in a customer service booth on the London Underground may not be a dream job, but for James Severy the early mornings left him with afternoons free to write and record music in his basement flat. There he lived on peanut butter on toast, hung out with moonbear and the folkoctopus and produced a 10 track demo which floated seamlessly from traditional folk, grime-inspired beats and guitar music for dancefloors. For lyrics, James took inspiration from Hunter S Thompson and Armando Ianucci and wrote about his experiences of going out, staying in...and not killing bus drivers. The demo made it's way to Art Goes Pop (the only label to receive the tracks) and they snapped it up straight away. Huw Stephens was equally impressed and gave the demo of Do The Circus Circus Radio One play. Huw asked James to play at the Latitude Festival and then invited him to record a session at the world famous Maida Vale studios, where James' sampling of Tom Waits and Dizzee Rascal resulted in his MySpace inbox being clogged up the morning after. All this before any commercial release was made available. So here it is. 2008 and Do The Circus Circus is the first important single of the year. It's a glimpse of a major new talent who's not afraid to take risks - an artist who's impossible to pigeon hole. Who knows what his next single's going to sound like.
