What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Who? feeling happy.

Nina Nastasia: 'What She Doesn't Know' (Fat Cat) Our Brian is pretty moved by this woman, so much so he doesn't know whether he's more besotted by her than PJ Harvey. On the A side she does her gentle strum and hum (sings actually). I can see Brian's spine melt into a pool of ectoplasm as I write. The flip contains some nice shuffling, percussive drums. The tracks are short sweet and to the point. Quality, if you like her warm brand of Americana.

What the label says:

Following last year’s stunning ‘You Follow Me’ album collaboration with Jim White, Nina Nastasia’s brand new limited edition 7” (500 copies) features two exclusive tracks recorded with Steve Albini at the time of Nina’s 2006 album ‘On Leaving’ album, intended at the time for a separate, future release.
•The release of this 7” just in time for a brief Spring European tour, with more dates to follow in May.
•Both tracks on this AA side single feature the same pared-down instrumentation (drums, guitar and vocal), each recorded with a different drummer. Drums on the explosively emotive ‘Your Red Nose’ are handled once again by the incomparable Jim White, drummer of choice for a host of acts such as Will Oldham, Smog, PJ Harvey, Dirty Three and Nick Cave to name but a few. ‘What She Doesn’t Know’ features Jay Bellerose, who also appears on Nina’s albums ‘The Blackened Air’ and ‘On Leaving’

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
