OVERVIEW:
Established in October 2006 the Moshi Moshi Singles club has already established itself as a launchpad for  an impressively diverse range of bands and musicians. The intention was to use the Singles Club as a platform to work with new artists and  the number of now-familiar names on this list bears testament to Moshi Moshi’s skill at spotting the stars of the future. From the punk of Danananayckroyd to the pop of Lykke Li, the folksy charm of Slow Club to the electro-pop of Friendly Fires, the anglo-hip-hop of Dels to the Jonathan Richmen-esque songwriting of the Wave Pictures this compilation has just about everything. The one consistent being the sheer quality. Hearing all the releases together feels a little akin to listening to a mix-tape handed down by a cooler older brother.

Here is a brief history and breakdown of the track’s in the words of label bosses Michael McClatchey and Stephen Bass  -

“When we started Moshi Moshi Records in 1998 it was a singles label. Admittedly more through lack of resources than design. But it was a format we loved working with and gave us some of our favourite releases (Bloc Party, The Rakes). As Moshi grew and we got the opportunity to put out albums, the one-off single releases fell by the wayside. Until in a fit of nostalgia we decided to revive our relationship and start a separate singles label to run alongside Moshi Moshi Records. We called it the moshi moshi singles club, just because ‘club’ sounded more inclusive than ‘label’. And we set two rules – the bands would come up with their own artwork, but  were only allowed to use one colour, and the pressing would be limited to no more than 1000 copies. This is a collection of all the A sides from the first 14 releases covering the first 18 months of the club.

Dananananaykroyd (released 8/10/06)
 “A fight-pop anthem about fucking. And the Moral implications of wearing animal skin clothes. Mostly.” The debut single from the Scottish 6 piece and the debut single from the singles club. (you should pronounce it Danan-anan-aykroyd). Raw as you like.
Matt & Kim (6/11/06)
Matt & Kim are quite simply, a lot of fun. They make you wanna dance. Their live shows have been known to descend into Sweeny Todd-esque frenzies of fake blood, missing limbs and gore, on stage pizza parties, or at the very least, sweaty, dancey, messy, crowd-surfing-fuelled sing-alongs. They love to play and they’re a band who don’t take themselves too seriously. Its a thoroughly endearing combination. And this one is quite simply a classic.
Rat:att:agg (4/12/06)
What the other one from Test-Icicles did next. Rory’s short-lived Rat:att:agg project lasted just long enough to play a handful of barnstorming gigs and produce this one amazing 7”.
Kate Nash (5/2/07)
Debut release from Kate in Feb 2007. This one was done as a double Aside to showcase both sides of Kate’s musical persona. The Aside (included here) turned out to be musical marmite. The AA side made her debut album.
Breakbot (21/5/07)
Quite simply great party tunes. On both sides of this 7”. Classic summer-soundtracking French electro-pop from Parisian Thibaut Berland.
Slow Club (25/6/07)
Aurally, they’re a one man band kind of affair. Except with two people. Rockabilly, folk and country all find some kind of place in their very long list of influences. You have to see them live to appreciate just how amazingly talented these two Sheffield kids are.
Pacific (30/7/07)
Romantic drum-machine pop from Sweden. This band have a genius for sounding incredibly familiar and new at the same time. The musical equivalent of a Dr Who regeneration.
Late Of The Pier (17/9/07)
An epic of a single. The Bohemian Rhapsody of the new millennium. This prodigiously imaginative four-piece crammed more ideas on 7”s of vinyl than any group should ever need. Erol Alkan helped them shoe-horn the ideas in.
The Wave Pictures (22/10/07)
The Wave Pictures exist in a bubble. Oblivious to every ‘scene’, they are charmingly unhip. And what is more have almost no grasp of how great they are. Like the vast majority of their music, this was recorded live with no overdubs or studio tricks.  We liked them so much we wouldn’t let them leave (their debut album comes out on moshi moshi records in May).
Elle S’appelle (5/11/07)
A three-piece guitar band from Liverpool without guitars, but with a girl and a keyboard. An instant indie-club classic. And one of the best debut singles of recent years.
Friendly Fires (10/12/07)
Floor-filling, anthemic synthpop. And great lyrics. This is a personal DJing favourite. Not the first release by the St Albans three-piece, but so far the best.
Lykke Li (18/2/08)
Probably the most conventionally pop of all the singles club releases. But theres definitely more to this 21-year-old Swede than meets the eye. A hushed, breath-y, out-of-the-box, smash from a lady destined for big things in 2008.
Team Water Polo (25/2/08)
The debut release from this Preston four-piece hints at a bright future.  Instantly catchy and packed full of interesting ideas. Some say this sounds like Abba. Well not exactly like Abba, but a hint of Mama Mia in the melody, This is no bad thing.
Dels (17/3/08)
23-year-old Ipswich-based new-kid-on-the-block, and hip hop wunderkid of huge potential. This collaboration between Dels and Joe Goddard from Hot Chip, is a subtle masterpiece of Hot-Chip-esque production, wonky electronics, experimentation, and fresh rhymes
