What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our BRIAN D feeling unmoved.

From old dogs to new tricks. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong posess the most preposterous name in recent memory. You'd feel a right twat going into a shop asking for this. I feel a git typing it out! Are these people trying to make a tit of me or what? EH?? After the embarassing 11+ exam failures Turncoat had me cringing yesterday this generic late noughties whirlwind of post Bloc Party guitars, breathless vocals & hyperactive drums soothes my ears but they really sound like dozens of other current bands.'Lonely Buoy' got that Smithsian jangle in there, the twists and turns so prevalent in Forward Russia's tunes but it all leaves me a little underwhelmed. There's not enough substance here to get me excited. Think they'd sound much better with a lady on vocals. So just save your money for the Pencil Toes single when it comes out. It'll rip the heck outta this limp effort! 2x7"s/CDs, or get all 3 for a fiver......Joy.

What the label says:

After finishing 2007 with an extended series of phenomenal shows - supporting CSS, Babyshambles, Dizzee Rascal and the Kaiser Chiefs as well as their own headline gigs, Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong refuse to let up the pressure in 2008. The band release their first commercial single, the scorching 'Lonely Buoy' on 10th March, and kick off what promises to be a year of non-stop gigging with a series of headline shows in January, before joining the Cribs on the NME Awards Tour in February.

The band formed in 2006 when Joe, then juggling drumming duties with The Pipettes, decided he needed an outlet for the effervescent pop symphonies that he had been writing. Luckily he didn't have to look far - "I realised I knew the three best guitarists in the country and managed to get one of them to play bass". Together with drummer James Craig, Panda (bass), Tom Dougall (guitar), Dom O'Dare (guitar) joined Joe in nearly a year of intensive writing and rehearsal before playing their first show early in 2007. After only a handful more gigs the buzz on London's music scene was deafening - a truly special band had arrived.

Most bands would struggle under the weight of expectation being heaped upon them so swiftly, yet Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong thrive under the pressure. Lonely Buoy is one hell of a debut. Combining Joe's knack for a classic pop lyric with fizzing guitars and melodies that stick like glue, its the perfect distillation of the boys' inspired blend of garage rock, classic pop and doo-wop. It will be released across 3 formats – a cd digipack, and two 7”s including a limited edition numbered vinyl in a gatefold case. With finishing touches currently being applied, it is left to 'Lonely Buoy' to provide the appetiser for what promises to be one hell of a main course

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
